Hi !

Today's shelf is Maïa and Fabien's, and it's very pretty !

Maïa and Fabien are friends of mine, and this is one of the shelves they have in their flat.

It's a huge shared shelf, so there's books from both of them on it, along with pictures and small objets all over. There are even some plates in a corner, because everyone know parisian kitchens don't have enough space for those !

Hi everybody !

Todfay's shelf is Malwina's, and it's so cute !

She lives in the netherlands and works as an independent crafter. Make sure to check out her website as well (you can spot it on the screen of the computer on her desk), because she makes the most beautiful items !

She makes handmade, unique accessories filled with color and joy, and thus her workplace is a little wonderland !

Look at all these fabrics ! This is kind of my dream desk (which would be a waste as I can barely sew a button)

She loves surrounding herself with fabrics, supplies (buttons, ribbons...), inspiring pictures and quotes, and lots of happy colors.

Ookah's shelf - Reloaded

Hi everybody !

So to start a new round of shelves, this is another one of mines. I already showcased a design books bookshelf here, but I also have regular non-design books and DVDs so to gain some space I put them behind a door in my tiny parisian flat.

This bookshelf in particular is mostly organized around anglo-saxons books, dvds and manga. Kind of a pop-culture shelf. For this time, let's take a look at the upper part !

As I said, it's behind a door so the light kinda crappy there. It's also the top of the bookshelf so the books are merely thrown there before I decide to organize them, so there's no real order, even though I try to keep books by the same author next to each other because it makes a nice set.

Can you spot all Nick Hornby's books ? And Murakami's ? And Douglas Coupland ?

Hint hint hint :

There are very few French books (even though it's my first language), but that's mostly because I love english books cover designs and tend to display those more.

We'll take a look at the rest of this shelf another time !

Hey !

Although it's been over a year since this blog has been on hiatus (mostly because I had lost my access ID... ok I'm a bit light-headed sometimes), I kinda feel like it's time to check some shelves again. (Not today though, let's take this thing slowly).

James' Shelf

Today's Shelf is James' !
Because he is a bit of a nutcase and can't do everything like everybody else, he decided to re-draw his shelf (well, desk) in Illustrator. Which is crazy, but look at the result ! This is amazingly detailled.
Here is a close-up :

James is a graphic designer and currently works for TF1News. So, as you can see, he has a big computer and lots of graphic design books. (And Lord Of The Rings, Back to the Future, Blade Runner and Mad Max. And about FOUR external hard drives. This CLEARLY is a guy's desk)

Eve's Shelf !

Hi everybody ! It's been a while, but here a new shelf !
Today's shelf is Eve's, from Bali (Indonesia).
She work as a sourcing agent, and is also a part time blogger and most of the time, a reader. That's why she needs as much space as possible to keep all her books. Learn more about her on her blog !

As she puts it, it's a bookcase AND a vanity at the same time !

Christin's Shelf

Hi everybody !

Today's shelf is Christin's, from Chicago (and sometimes NY). She works for a non-profit organization where she crunches numbers. So, she does a lot of math at work, and reading is a nice contrast to that. She has a little built in shelf that separates the kitchen from the dining room. (that's such a good idea !). It holds about half her books, which she holds pretty dear. Notice the little porcelain doves ? Cute, right ?

Sue's Shelf

Hi everybody !
Today's shelf is Sue's. Sue is from rural South Australia, and she creates fashion jewellery and works with found objects and uses old stuff to create new stuff. She has a studio in her house, where she puts all her materials. The studio isn't large (3x2,7 m) so she piles up everything.
She is also studying printmaking. Many talents !

Today's Shelf is Kate's !
Kate is 23, from Southern Illinois, and currently pursuing a master degree in communication and women's studies. She loves books and brass animal figurines (as you can plainly see in the above pic)

Bookshelf organized by color !!! This is SO cool.
Just look at all the details : every object on that shelf is placed carefully according to its color. This is a masterpiece, honestly.

Edith's Shelf

Today's Shelf is Edith's !
She is from California, USA, and gratuated from university mast june with degrees in Political Science and International Studies (whoa, that's serious). She's currently applying to grad school, taking various classes and making super pretty jewelry you can buy on Etsy.
This bookcase is the not solely hers, her twin sister and boyfriend helped fill it up.

There is 8 different Rubiks Cubes on this shelf !
Edith says her boyfriend can solve 7 of them, which is impressive.
Various book : lots of Harry Potter, Catch-22, Orson Scott Card's Ender in Exile, Jane Austen.

More books, and what really looks like VHS
(I can spot 3 Disney movies, on DuckTail and the Wizard of Oz). Vintage style !
Also, take a look at the games : I'm especially curious about the "Lost in a Jigsaw" box...

Ho and Crayolas. Wonderful addition to any shelf.

Luisa's Shelf

Today's Shelf is Luisa's ! She's 29 and lives in Frankfurt, Germany (see that, CheckMyshelf is going really international !). She works for an advertising company as a project manager, and when she doesn't work she sews. She's actually preparing crafty stuff to sell on Etsy soon, this is why she bought this particular bookshelf, in order to organise her crafty books, fabrics and materials.
Her creations are so cute and perfectly produced, it's amazing.

Hi everybody !

Today's very pretty shelf is Mila's, from the Netherlands. She finished Social Studies at the University in 2009 and is now looking for a job, ideally in something like Interior Design Styling.
She also loves creating handmade goods (you can buy them HERE, there's some really cute stuff !).

Remember Tan's shoe shelf ? Well, she also reads books. A lot.

What a selection ! Complete Lewis Carrol, Lester Bangs, Punk Years, Persepolis, The Golden Age of Advertising, We Sang Through Tears. Eclectic.

Tan's not only a shoe-freak, she studies archeology and ethnology. Which is why she has books named Prehistory in France, Big Atlas of Archeologie, On Dinosaurs Earth...
And cute animal plushes. (Noticed the Poo Plush ?)

Avi's Shelf

Today's shelf is Avi's. He's currently working on his thesis about war (no kidding), and lives in a cute and rather small studio in Paris. His flat is filled with books, so to keep a livable space the bookshelf is directly IN the wall, under the roof. Clever !

Various book titles : Dictionnary of military strategy, Nobleness in the Middle Ages, Hugues Capet, War in the Tribal Zone. And, funnily enough, Half-Life 2.

And check out thoses old books on the bottom shelf ! Priceless.

Let's kick-start with a really cool shelf : Tan's shoes shelf. I've always wanted to put my shoes in some kind of display, instead of a big pile hidden in some cupboard. Well, Tan did it and it rocks.

Just take a second to find these hidden objets in the picture above :

Got it ? Good !

And I really like the "Andy Warhol Geant" giant book casually placed at the far right.

Sylvie's Shelf

Hi everybody !

Today's shelf is very special and I'm very proud to show it to you. It's Sylvie's Shelf, and it's organized BY ALPHABETICAL ORDER ! Can you believe that ? I have seen it in real life, and I can tell you, it's really spectacular. Everybody would like to organize their books like that, but let's face it, nobody summons up the courage to do it. Sylvie did !

And not only is it organized alphabetically, it's also very well categorized : novels on the left bookcase, and detective fiction on the right one. Great or what ?

Bonus : check out the cute plush sheeps on the right !

I can't help but point out some flaws in the organization :

I see here a Nick Hornby novel (Slam, the one with the black spine) a bit too far away from another Nick Hornby (Vous descendez, A long way down, the one with the red spine). It kind of makes me feel better to see that even a perfectly organized bookshelf has its problems !

But that is easily forgiven, given that there's a very cute chicken guarding the books.

Alison's Shelf

Hi everybody ! Today's shelf comes from California, USA, thanks to Alison. Alison is a graduate student in ecology (is that cool or what ?). Besides research, she enjoys making music, paintings and tostadas (I had to check this word, and DAMN it sounds good).

In her own words, "[she] used to consciously try to make [her] bookshelf a snapshot of [herself] and what [she] thinks about", which is also my idea of a great bookcase. I mean, we all got shameful books hidden on the back of our shelves, but let's be honest, we display the really good ones right in front. Right ?
This bookshelf is from Ikea, simple and sturdy, and I personnaly really like it because I used to have the same... tee-hee !

You kind of see the theme here, right ?

Today's shelf is Maria's ! Ok, this is not really a shelf, more like a big pile of graphic design books. But that's because Maria's got wayyyy too much books, so she chose to show us this nice selection (VERY nice. Man, I wish I had some of those books). Maria's still at school, but she has already worked in various design fields, and for companies like Panasonic, Arte France, Fly and Oxford. (woo !). She's going to Argentina in a few days, but you can still keep in touch on her blog Kiedis.fr

Today's shelf is from another Alice, with whom I was also at school with. You can take a look at her website : www.alicelambert.com

For a change, this is not a bookshelf, but a packaging shelf ! Alice is very fond of packaging from all over the world, and she collects design water bottles. She said : "I love the range of materials, papers of printing modes that packaging offers". And she's right, packaging rules.

The aforementioned collection of water bottles. Pretty impressive, eh ?

The 4th shelf is Alice's !

Alice was also in Graphic Design School with me, and she shares my love of design books and any printed material. She currently lives in Paris with her flatmate, and until very recently she babysat for my goldfish.

You can see her artwork on her BLOG.

Here, I can spot 3 chris Ware albums (Jimmy corrigan, Quimby and Acme Novelty), various books on Typography, art encyclopedias, and numerous arts magazines. Graphic Designer spotted !

ABC3D, the great typo pop-up book, 2 Junko Mizuno artbooks, and a question mark. Wow !

Corner book shelf, I love it ! Plus it seems quite organized : graphic books on the left, regular books on the right.

This is HolyMother's shelf. Well, one of her numerous bookshelves actually. I know for a fact that her flat is filled with books, from floor to ceiling.

As you can see, there's quite a nautical theme going on over there...

... and HolyMother is suffering from "I don't remember buying that book" syndrome, which means she has bought "The Wall" by Jean-Paul Sartre three times without realising she already had it...

... and finally, two bonus points for the color-theme over there !

I'm going to open the ball. I'm Ookah, I'm a freelance graphic designer, (www.ookah.com) so I work at home, which is a very good excuse to buy tons of graphic design books. Buying books is my weakness, along with buying vinyls to play on my almost-dead hi-fi system. And buying vintage dresses, but this is another subject.

Je vais ouvrir le bal. Je suis Ookah, graphiste freelance, (www.ookah.com) ce qui fait que je bosse chez moi. Une excuse en or pour acheter plein de livres de graphisme. Acheter des livres est une de mes faiblesses. Comme acheter des vinyls pour lire sur ma chaine hifi quasi morte. Ou acheter des robes vintage, mais c'est une autre histoire.

As you can see, the shelf is completly bending under the weight of those damn books...

Comme vous pouvez le voir, l'étagère ploit sous le poids de ces maudits bouquins...
